I Timothy 5:1-2

Introduction: "Monitoring the condition of the church"

God's work for the church (1:1-4:16)

God's way in the church (5:1-2)

Why the church needs change

We are over matched
We are called sheep
We easily forget God's grace
We forget the other side of salvation
We are prone to selfishness
We confuse what is a free gift with what is worthless
We place the world's order over God's order
We forget that God has a purpose for the godly
We are progressively sanctified
We lose sight of eternity
We are one body
We are one witness

How Christians should be changing one another

Negative: Do not beat the sheep
Positive: Be encouragers together in faith

Speak with the respect of a child speaking to a parent
Speak with the concern of a brother speaking to a sibling
Speak with the propriety of a man speaking to a woman
Speak with the help of a friend speaking to a friend
Speak with the wisdom of a teacher speaking to a student
Speak with the care of a shepherd speaking to a sheep
Speak with the gentleness of a physician speaking to a patient

MESSAGE:

"WE ARE TO BE ENCOURAGERS TOGETHER BY FAITH
BECAUSE WE CAN ALL BE CHANGED
BY SUCH ENCOURAGMENT."

A widow at least 60 years old (9a)
A widow with only one family's source of support (9b)
A widow who is commendable in her Christian conduct (10)

The church should not support for life an ineligible Christian widow

A widow who is not all alone (4,8)
A widow with self-inflicted poverty (6)
A widow less than 60 years old (11-13, 15)

Still seeking personal fulfillment
Not fully devoted to serving Christ
Idle in good works, active in evil deeds

Who should support the ineligible Christian widow?

A second husband (14a)
The widow herself (14b)
A resourceful Christian woman friend (16)

MESSAGE:

"WE WHO HAVE RECEIVED CHRIST'S GRACE
AND ARE ENJOYING GOD'S BLESSINGS
SHOULD BE SHOWING THAT GRACE
BY BEING A BLESSING TO OTHERS."

Honor one another (5:1-2)
Honor widows (5:3-16)
Honor leaders (elders) (5:17-25)
Honor masters (6:1-2)

To Christian slaves with pagan masters (6:1)

Choose to always treat your master with honor
Chose to always be a good witness for your faith

Our God is greater than the life around us
Our eternal reward is greater than the burdens upon us

To Christian slaves with Christian masters (6:2)

Show them honor
Be more diligent to serve
Do acts of kindness to the household of faith

"TO BE A WITNESS FOR THE LORD AND FOR THE GOSPEL,
CHOOSE TO SHOW HONOR, CHOOSE TO GIVE SERVICE,
AND CHOOSE TO DO GOOD TO OTHERS ALL OF THE TIME."

Wisdom for living from slaves:

We are all slaves to someone or something
We build or break our lives by the choices we make
In the darkness of sin we can shine as a light for righteousness
We reflect Jesus when we are serving others
We reflect Jesus when we bring blessings to others at our own cost
We reflect Jesus when we respond to injustice in faith
Our conduct reflects our conviction about the greatness of our God
Our conduct reflects our value of eternal rewards
Disunity in the world can become unity in Christ
If slaves can glorify God, how much more should we glorify God
Our personal peace and comfort must not be our highest goal
It is not our station in life but our relationship with the Lord that counts most

Honor what is true (6:3-10)

The subject is Jesus Christ
The object is godly living

The distortion of Bible teaching (4a)

Personal pride of the teacher
Biblical ignorance of the teacher
Spiritual instability of the teacher

The danger of distorted Bible teaching (4b-5)

Competition instead of cooperation
Disunity instead of unity
Ignorance and lies instead of understanding and truth
Greed instead of godliness

Promote godliness as it was meant to be (6-10)

Learn to be contented with godliness
The products of greed end with death
Godliness is for now and forever
Greed has present hazards, future problems, and final failure
Greed and godliness walk different paths
Greed and godliness have different experiences
Greed and godliness arrive at different goals

I Timothy - The Gospel

Introduction: "A race against time for the lives of men"

The gospel Paul preached is that Jesus Christ died for our sins
and arose from the dead, and if we believe in Him we will be saved.

Jesus' purpose for living on the earth was to save sinners
Jesus through His death established peace between God and man
The condition for salvation is always faith in Jesus
The Bible is the pathway to learning of this salvation

The gospel is best understood in the context of an invisible spiritual war.

This war began in heaven and is being decided on the earth
This war is fought throughout time with consequences in eternity
Christians are called to win temporal battles to receive eternal rewards

The gospel is a divine message carried in a fragile human package.

It is a trust given to the church
It must compete with man's pride
It must compete with Satan's lies

The gospel gives us insight into the nature of God.

God is a righteous and loving person desiring peace with all people
God is merciful to some
God is the most special person above all

The gospel is more than rescuing people from judgment for their sins.

Forgiveness then godliness is the completion of the gospel
The gospel should bring out the best in us
The gospel should promote Jesus Christ in the world through us

MESSAGE:

"THE BETTER WE UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL,
THE BETTER WE WILL LIVE FOR THE LORD IN THE WORLD."
